You are not competing with who you think you are.

February 24, 2026 — by Mara Ellison

The competitor slide in your deck lists the three venture-backed firms in your category. Your win-loss data tells another story: you lose most often to no decision at all.

Status quo is not a soft competitor. It has infinite budget, zero onboarding, and a champion in every meeting. Positioning against the named rivals while ignoring it is why good products stall at the same revenue plateau.

Your real competitor is the spreadsheet, the intern, and 'we'll handle it internally.'

Rewrite the argument: not 'why us instead of them' but 'why anything instead of nothing.' Price the cost of the current mess in the customer's own numbers. When the do-nothing option finally has a price tag, the named competitors become the easy part.

One client re-cut their first sales call around this single change. Close rates moved nine points in a quarter — before a word of product changed.
